Remember when the rumors of Audi buying McLaren lit the Internet on fire earlier this week? The latter was quick to deny this rumor, saying in an official statement which read:
McLaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed.
McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group.
You might’ve thought that this would be the end of the entire debacle, but according to Reuters, Audi’s supervisory board will have discussions today (November 17) on how the company can potentially enter Formula 1, which (confusingly) includes a possible partnership with McLaren (again).
For context, the Volkswagen Group has expressed interest in entering one of its manufacturers into F1. Porsche and Audi are prime candidates, as the two brands already have sizeable motorsport campaigns.
Whether this may finally turn out to be true or not, one thing is evident: with the incoming regulation changes and Honda leaving Red Bull to work on its in-house powertrain division, it’s prime time for a new manufacturer to get their foot into the grid. Which manufacturer would you like to see entering F1 in the coming years?
