In Mercedes-Benz‘s growing line of electric vehicles, its EQE SUV is the multipurpose variant of the EQE Saloon for those who need cargo space and versatility.
Continuing with the styling of other EQ vehicles, it features an egg-shaped body with a drag coefficient of 0.25, resting on wheels with sizes ranging from 19 inches to 22 inches.
In spite of being more spacious than the sedan with a trunk space of 520L (expandable up to 1,675L with the rear seats folded), the SUV is actually shorter with a wheelbase of 3,030mm.
It comes with four-link suspension at the front and independent multilink suspension at the rear with the option for air suspension with an active damping system.
The ride height can be raised up to 30mm for more ground clearance, while the rear axle can steer at a maximum angle of 10°, decreasing the turning circle from 12.3m to 10.5m.
The EQE SUV comes in three variants: the EQE 350+, the EQE 350 4Matic, and the EQE 500 4Matic. All three come with a 400V battery producing various power figures.
The EQE 350+ is rear-wheel-drive (unlike the other two), and produces 288hp and 565Nm. The EQE 350 4Matic and the EQE 500 4Matic are both all-wheel-drive with 288hp and 765Nm, and 402hp and 858Nm, respectively.
The standard onboard charger is rated at 11kW (9.6kW in the US) with an option for a 22kW charger. The maximum DC charging capacity is 170kW with a maximum range of 220km after 15 minutes. Mercedes boasts a maximum range of up to 590km, but that’s only for the 350+ variant with the 4Matic models having slightly lower numbers.
Being a luxury vehicle, the EQE SUV features an avant-garde interior with an option for the Hyperscreen. The climate control system uses a heat pump to efficiently warm the cabin using the waste heat from the battery and the motor. Without the noise of an internal-combustion engine, the Serene Breeze acoustic system allows users to enjoy a variety of soundscapes while driving.
The Navigation with Electric Intelligence system doesn’t do simple route planning, but also considers the charging stations and costs along the way. Those living in Europe and North America can use the Mercedes me Charge network with personalized charging rates depending on the users’ driving style.
In case you want to personalize your EQE SUV, don’t worry as the car can be customized through the Mercedes me Store with additional features, and even new firmware being delivered over-the-air similar to smartphones.
If there’s anything we can take away from this, the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV shows that EVs aren’t just cars with the engine swapped for an electric motor. Rather, the automobile itself has become a smart device, constantly connected and being updated. Don’t expect everything to be free, though.
Speaking of money, no price has been announced nor has a release date been given. But with production beginning in December in Alabama, the Americans will surely be the first ones in line for this vehicle.
