Toyota is one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, but its history in motorsports can be considered a little checkered. Its Formula 1 campaign in the 2000s turned out to be a fruitless and expensive one. But the brand has proven itself to be a fierce competitor in other disciplines like the World Rally Championship, where it is now the 2023 season’s constructors’ champion.
What is remarkable about this achievement is that there are still two events left on the calendar, which just shows how dominant the manufacturer’s Gazoo Racing outfit has been all year round. Topping everything off is the guarantee that Toyota will also win the drivers’ title. It will all depend on whether Kalle Rovanperä or Elfyn Evans will have the most points at the end of the season.
Of course, Gazoo Racing chairman Akio Toyoda was only proud of what his works team has achieved under the leadership of team principal and ex-rally driver Jari-Matti Latvala. Aside from the drivers and the navigators, the performance of the GR Yaris Rally1 was also lauded as it has won eight of the 11 races held so far.
The penultimate round of the 2023 WRC is the Central European Rally, a new event that will be hosted by Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. A fitting end to Toyota’s successful season is the finale in Rally Japan.
