The Acura ZDX is the faster, plusher cousin of the Honda Prologue

Late last year, Honda revealed to the North American market a fully electric crossover called the Prologue. Inevitably, a version from its luxury division Acura would follow suit, and it would revive a model name that used to be an early adopter in the segment: ZDX.

First released in 2009, the first-generation Acura ZDX received polarizing reception for its coupe SUV design, and was one of the first models to wear the then-new corporate grille, dubbed the “Power Plenum.” The nameplate died in 2013 due to slow sales, yet critics admit that the ZDX came in and left too early for the party.

Now, Acura has revived those three letters for a new EV crossover with the help of General Motors. Like the Prologue, the new crossover is derived from the Ultium BEV3 platform shared with the Chevrolet Blazer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq.

The A-Spec carries a rear-mounted single motor (with an optional addition for an AWD setup) producing 340hp, while the Type S has all-wheel dual motors from the get-go with 500hp to pull.

The Type S will also receive major upgrades such as 15.6-inch Brembo front brakes, multilink air suspension, and 275/40 performance tires wrapped around 22-inch wheels.

These two trim levels signify the ZDX’s position as a performance vehicle—similar to the Integra—while claiming to achieve EPA range ratings of about 523km and 463km.

Inside lies a seamless screen design containing an 11-inch driver information cluster and an 11.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included, unlike its GM cousins. An 18-speaker sound system from Bang & Olufsen envelops the cabin with Acoustic Lens Technology.

AcuraWatch, the brand’s proprietary safety system, is standard on all models, introducing new features: Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Blind Zone Steering Assist, and exclusively for the Type S, Hands Free Cruise.

The new Acura ZDX will begin production at the GM Ramos Arizpe Assembly plant in Mexico and deliveries by early 2024. With a starting price range of $60,000 (P3.375 million), this will be in the same EV crossover ballpark as the Cadillac Lyriq.
