The letter A is the first to come in the alphabet. For Mercedes-Benz, it also symbolizes its entry-level models. If you wanted a crossover, that’s what the Mercedes-Benz GLA is for. But for the traditional enthusiasts, that’s where the A-Class comes in.
For one, it’s offered either as a sedan or a hatchback, so buyers are spoiled for choice when it comes to form factors.
The A180 hatchback starts at P3.15 million, while its sedan sibling is a little more affordable, starting at P3.09 million. Both come with the AMG Line package, with aggressive front and rear fascias, and sporty 18-inch AMG five-twin-spoke wheels. It also carries all the prestige that its more expensive siblings bear, with features like high-performance LED headlamps and a diamond-style radiator grille that proudly displays the famed star.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a cabin that has everything you need to luxuriously get around in the 21st century. You can control the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (or MBUX) operating system displayed on the seven-inch digital instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch touchscreen by voice controls, by the touchpad, or by the touch controls found on the steering wheel.
You will have a very comfortable ride, too, thanks to the Artico leather- and Dinamica microfiber-upholstered seats. It also comes with the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive suite of driver-assistance systems, like the Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, and the Active Braking Assist with braking support and autonomous braking if the situation calls for it.
Both of these are powered by a 1.3-liter in-line-four with 136hp and 200Nm, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. It’s the right combination of frugal and peppy, but if you crave more power, Mercedes-AMG offers the AMG A35 range, also in hatchback and sedan forms. That has a 2.0-liter four-banger with 306hp and 400Nm, which is a guaranteed recipe for fun. You can read our first impressions of that vehicle here.
