The Light Rail Transit Authority is giving some love to persons with disabilities on Election Day (May 9). The LRTA announced today that PWDs will be given free rides on the LRT-2 on said day.

Mobility-impaired individuals may avail of the free rides at any time between the first commercial trip at 5am up to the last commercial trip, which is at 8:30pm from Antipolo station and 9pm from Recto station. A PWD must present his/her valid PWD identification to any station or security personnel when entering the Automatic Fare Collection System gates to get the complimentary ride.

The freebie is one of the measures proposed by the Department Of Transportation to provide accessibility and support for PWDs during the elections via its Task Force on Disability Affairs. LRTA administrator Jeremy Regino said: “The provision of accessible transportation is one of the main requirements for PWD to be able to participate in the national elections, and the LRT-2 is ready and available to accommodate them.”

Regino also added that PWDs should utilize the Special Boarding Area, which is designated to accommodate PWDs, senior citizens, and pregnant women. Furthermore, wheelchair users can enjoy designated spaces located inside the trains.

The LRT-2 is a commuter-friendly system, especially for the physically impaired. Thanks to its accessibility facilities like ramps, elevators with Braille signages, Braille staircase handrails, pathfinding tactiles, and restrooms, PWDs can enjoy the benefits of this mass-transport system.

Make sure to spread the word out to PWDs in your family or circle of friends.
