Want a flashy Toyota Avanza? Check out the Veloz

The name “Veloz” isn’t new in Toyota nomenclature. It used to be the name of the top-of-the-line variant of the Avanza, the changes of which only went skin-deep with flashier wheels and more chrome. But now, the Veloz is now a stand-alone product, and the all-new version packs various toys that should make it a little more desirable than its twin.

Underneath the bodywork, the Veloz is essentially just the latest Avanza. Some of the design elements of the Daihatsu New Global Architecture on which it is based include a monocoque body and front-wheel drive. This is said to give the Avanza/Veloz and the Daihatsu Xenia better handling and more interior space than their predecessors.

While the Avanza has two engine options, the Veloz only has one. The 1.5-liter 2NR-VE gasoline motor cranks out 105hp and 138Nm, and puts the power down on the road via a continuously variable transmission.

The Avanza and the Veloz have identical profiles, but the latter gets styling upgrades in the form of chrome trim pieces, a different radiator grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, redesigned headlights, and an LED lightbar across the tailgate.

The Veloz can be had in two flavors. Standard equipment across the range includes a seven-inch instrument display, two-tone leatherette/fabric upholstery, mood lighting, automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. As for safety, there are six airbags on top of the usual antilock brakes and stability control.

The upper Q variant commands a significant premium over the base G trim level because it now comes with Toyota Safety Sense. This was once limited to Toyota’s premium models, but Veloz users can now enjoy the peace of mind offered by the TSS suite. Owners have access to blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beam.
