Yes, it has only been a few weeks since the Oscars happened. However, it is time to look forward and see what might be getting in for the 94th Academy Awards. With a guaranteed ten nominees for next year’s show, I will be sharing my early predictions in the Best Picture category with a reason as to why I am predicting it.
Note: This list is currently based on expected release dates for these films, and as such all of the films predicted may not actually release this year.
Canterbury Glass – The latest film from David O. Russell is one that should end up being a major award season after the success of American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. With the huge cast list for the film, it won’t be surprising if this is another film from O. Russell that sweeps acting nominations on top of Director and Picture.
Don’t Look Up – Despite how controversial Adam McKay’s Vice was, it still got a good number of nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. With Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence leading this project, this could end up being another controversial Best Picture nominee.
Dune – There is obviously a chance that this ends up being purely a technical showcase and that it does not do enough to get above-the-line nominations, but it is hard to look at the first trailer for Dune and not place it in the ten most expected films for Best Picture.
Flee – The first of two films on my list that has been seen, haven been shown at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. This is not only a film that I personally loved, but one that might make history at the Oscars. It is eligible for Best International Feature, Best Animated Feature, and Best Documentary, and if it does make all three then how do you deny it a Best Picture nomination?
The French Dispatch – This has been one of my most anticipated films of the past few years, and it could end up being the case that Wes Anderson’s latest film will finally get the Cannes premiere it was meant to have in 2020. Another film that has a stellar cast, and when Wes Anderson is in the race it has to be a factor when coming up for Best Picture.
House of Gucci – This is a film that could end up disappointing and being an “this had Oscar potential” project, but right now I stay optimistic with the early photos we have seen on the set. Adam Driver and Lady Gaga are set for their next acting nominations here if the film by Ridley Scott is as good as we hope.
Mass – The second film that has been seen, also showing at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. This is my favourite film from the festival and I seriously hope that Bleecker Street have a good campaign for the acting races and the incredible script, pushing it into the Best Picture race.
Nightmare Alley – Guillermo del Toro’s latest directorial project after his Best Picture winner The Shape of Water. Yeah, this is one that has to be mentioned on any early predictions list.
Soggy Bottom -Paul Thomas Anderson returns with a film that is desperate for a new title but a project that should make big waves this award season. Perhaps this is the film that Bradley Cooper finally wins his Oscar for?
The Tragedy of Macbeth – Directed by Joel Coen. Produced by and starring Frances McDormand. Do I need to say any more?
