If the watches from Porsche Design aren’t your thing, maybe you’d prefer something with a bit more horological history—such as a brand like TAG Heuer?
One of the company’s most famous watches is the Carrera Chronograph. You’d be forgiven if you thought that this classic chronograph had been directly connected with Porsche’s legendary road cars ever since, but it isn’t.
But now, after so long, the two brands have recently announced a partnership, and the aptly named TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph Special Edition is the first of many watches expected to come out of the alliance.
The first thing that will catch your eye are the traditional Porsche colors found all over the watch—red, black and gray. Red elements adorn the inscribed Porsche logo found on the ceramic bezel, the stripe on the crown, and the tips on the various hands. The watch dial is textured in a way for it to resemble asphalt, with the hands, the indices and the numerals coated in SuperLuminova lume. The font of the Arabic numerals on the dial are similar to what you would find in the gauge cluster of Porsche cars, all residing under a domed sapphire crystal with antireflective coatings on both sides.
The polished steel case comes in at a rather large 44mm, and is waterproof up to 100m. The see-through caseback of the watch proudly displays the Calibre Heuer02 movement that has a power reserve of 80 hours. And the rotor of the watch is shaped to resemble a steering wheel, with “TAG Heuer” and “Porsche” engraved on it.
The watch is priced at a cool $5,850 (P284,000). It comes with a steel bracelet or a black leather strap. We think that this has to be one of the better car-inspired collaborations we’ve seen from a watchmaker in a while.
