I am reaching the point where my access to the Oscar Shortlist short films is running out and I will be reaching out to PR teams to sort me out for the rest of the season. However, I instead used that this time week to check out some films over on Short of the Week, which is where every short here was watched on. I ended up watching three shorts of varying quality, so I am excited to give them a review and share them with you.
Emily
Director: Marlies van der Wel
Synopsis: An old florist reminisces on her life. She has always been very generous to the people around her, but will the generosity ever be returned? Will she ever receive flowers herself?
A very sweet short film with some beautiful animations. The style won’t be for everyone but it is exactly what I love. I do wish the story had more power and narrative to it, as I did struggle to care about it, however the craft is gorgeous to watch.

The Gallery
Director: Anthony Ing
Synopsis: At an audition, Maya becomes part of an absurd cycle… losing track of who she’s performing for and why.
A really effective short film that takes a surrealist approach and has fun with its subject matter. The film is left open for interpretation, but gives you enough hints to place the pieces and allow for theories and discussion. Clever and well made for a low-budget short.

Bear With Me
Director: Daphna Awadish
Synopsis: A short animated documentary on immigrants who left their home and crossed borders for love.
Whilst I appreciate the approach for telling this story, it sadly didn’t work for me. The animation is nice when softened, but distracts from the story and makes it hard to connect with. Whether this film needed longer to make a compelling narrative or to have some form of human to connect to, this short film was just missing a spark.
