To say that 2020 was a very difficult year for the automotive industry is an understatement. Sales were down by a rather significant 40%. But 2020 was also a time when there was nothing left to do but be hopeful that things could only get better. Kia Philippines has certainly helped in the cause with the debut of the Stonic, a crossover that fills the need for personal mobility at an affordable price. And this year, the company’s product plans may just spark excitement for the Filipino consumer.
That’s because the Korean carmaker already has concrete plans to launch two vehicles this year, with an option to debut two more (depending on market conditions). Right now, there is no indication if these cars will either be all-new ones or just updated models. However, it does give a good account of Kia’s optimism as far as recovery is concerned.
Below are models that could see the light of day in our territory in 2021. We just want to be clear that these are merely guesses. See if you agree.
Kia Carnival. This is a strong contender as the all-new model has just been launched last year. The Carnival combines sharp SUV styling with people-carrier comfort and versatility.
Kia Niro. In overseas markets, the Niro is available in electric and plug-in hybrid variants. It’s a long shot, but the automaker can probably make its entry in the electrified vehicle segment with this one.
Kia Picanto. The cute Picanto is already a feature-packed city car. The GT-Line treatment should give this hatchback a little bit of spice in the styling department.
Kia Sorento. We loved the previous-generation Sorento’s ride quality and driving dynamics, so this all-new model should be a stylish alternative to pickup-based SUVs.
Kia Soul. Again, this is another wildcard, but with the Soul having a battery-powered version in other countries, this could be a possible entrant in the country’s EV market.
